REA 1905 customizes a weekly one-on-one meeting with a tutor, where you will focus on strategies to increase reading efficiency and comprehension. At the beginning of the semester, you and your tutor will set specific goals for your reading abilities, and at each appointment your tutor will help guide you on steps toward reaching those goals. You will bring your own reading materials – books, scholarly articles, published essays, etc. for your classes – to each meeting, and you and your tutor will discuss various approaches and strategies for understanding and using those materials.

This course allows you to focus on learning what works to help you read and understand college-level texts. You will not be required to read additional material for this course, but you will be required to bring a reading assignment from another class and be prepared to discuss it with your tutor.

Although there are no “homework assignments” for this course, your “homework” will be to apply the reading strategies your tutor demonstrates and explains to readings for your other courses. Together, you and your tutor will find a strategy that helps you process and retain what you read. Your tutor may recommend note-taking strategies, or supplemental materials such as Youtube videos, podcasts, or website resources to assist you with comprehension. These suggestions are to assist you and can be explored in time outside class. If you have questions on these or any other resources to help you be a “better reader,” email Dr. Jennifer Wells for a list of recommended materials.

Although this course focuses on strategies to improve college-level reading, RWC tutors are also trained in writing strategies and can assist students with writing polished, collegiate, stylish compositions. If you are interested in “writing better” at FSU, please see the information on ENG 1905.

All REA 1905 students must adhere to the general RWC course policies. Look over the most common questions for important inofrmation about scheduling, RWC locations, and requirements for this course.
