ENG 5998 customizes a weekly one-on-one meeting with a tutor, where you will generate and develop ideas for your academic writing. Designed for graduate-level writing and unique concerns, all ENG 5998 tutors are graduate students. Many have teaching experience or have been published. Please see our Tutor Bios for more information.
At the beginning of the semester, you and your tutor will set specific goals for the development of the piece, or pieces, in progress. Prepare to focus on one or two major pieces of creative or academic writing for the semester – a chapter from a book or dissertation, creative portfolio pieces, essays for publication submission or classes, etc.
This course allows graduate students to discuss their specific topic of interest with another graduate student who will assist them with clear logic and argument structure, research resources and strategies, transitioning between ideas or topics, incorporation of sources, and language choice.
Tutors are not professional editors and cannot line edit pieces for grammatical perfection, but they can help you identify what grammatical patterns present problems in the writing.
Your tutor may also recommend supplemental materials such as Youtube videos, podcasts, or website resources to assist you with grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, or language usage difficulties. These suggestions are to assist you and can be explored in time outside class. If you have questions on these or any other resources to help you be a better writer, email Dr. Jennifer Wells for a list of recommended materials.
If you teach an undergraduate class and feel that this type of one-on-one tutoring may be beneficial to your students, please see the pages on ENG 1905 and REA 1905 for information on undergraduate RWC courses.
All ENG 5998 students must adhere to the general RWC course policies. Look over the most common questions for important inofrmation about scheduling, RWC locations, and requirements for this course.
